Glossary beginning with Q
A form of lyrical poetry adopted by Persian poets from the Arab literary tradition (literally, ‘intention’). Superficially it resembles the ghazal with similar strong rhyme and rhyming metre, but typically running to 100 lines or more. The qasida is characterised by a last verse, known as the maqtaʿ, in which the poet praises himself and includes his takhullus or pen-name.
