nafs

The base or lower faculties of human beings; the ego.

nama

A history, or a body of writing.

naqqashhana

An artists' or illuminators' workshop attached to the royal court.

naskhi

A script widely used in Arabic manuscripts or in manuscripts of Persian prose, characterised by its clarity.

nastaʿliq

A script developed in the 14th century that became, over the course of the next 200 years, the hand most used by calligraphers for copying Persian poetry. It is characterised by a diagonal slope or elongation of some letters.

Prose (literally, ‘scattered’).

Poetry (literally, ‘ordering’).

ney

A reed flute.

nilgai

An Asian antelope, native to northern and central India.

nisba

An addition to a person’s name referring to that person’s place of origin, profession or special characteristic.
