Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond

Digital comic creation

Create a digital comic based on a classic Persian tale, either in part or whole.

This activity is linked to the Digital storytelling & 'Love and devotion' inquiry unit and targeted at VELS Level 4–5 students. Refer to the curriculum outcomes to see how this unit aligns with VELS.


  • Choose a story from the Story summaries.
  • Sign up for Google docs.
  • Log into Google docs and select create presentations from the menu.
  • Create scenes using any of the resources below, eg a choice of character cut-outs on top of background images. You can create multiple scenes on one slide, or alternatively, use a new slide for each new scene.
  • Upload images by selecting insert image from the menu.
  • Add speech or thought bubbles by selecting insert shapes or insert callouts [choose 'bubble image']. Click inside the bubble to add text.
  • Download the presentation.


  • Computer with internet connectivity
  • Cut-out images of characters, backgrounds and original manuscripts featured in the story summaries
  • Story summaries: read synopses of the stories
  • Useful websites: find information about comics and graphic novels inspired by Persian stories, as well as alternative online tools for creating a digital comic

  • Comic life: excellent comic generator program, also available for iPad
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: images can be imported and speech and thought bubbles produced using Autoshapes
  • Toondoo: free online comic creator
