Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond

Comic creation

Create a comic based on a classic Persian tale, either in part or whole. 

This activity is linked to the 'Love and devotion' – the stories inquiry unit and targeted at VELS Level 4–5 students. Refer to the curriculum outcomes to see how this unit aligns with VELS.

Exercise

  • Choose a story from the Story summaries.
  • Choose the corresponding comic template
  • Cut out characters and decorate with other media if desired
  • Choose a manuscript background (either the same image used multiple times, or numerous images) and print as A4 size
  • Storyboard each scene of the comic, including speech and text
  • Create speech bubbles with text using drawing tools in computer software, or using Google Docs presentation
  • Print and cut out speech bubbles
  • Paste characters and speech bubbles onto backgrounds to create a comic.

Resources

  • Computer with design software eg Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, or internet connectivity for using Google Docs
  • Comic template – cut out characters from the story summaries
  • Story summaries – read synopses of the stories
  • Useful websites – find information about comics inspired by Persian stories, as well as online tools for storyboarding and creating comics
  • Background images
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Media to create and decorate characters eg paints, pastels, pencils, charcoal, crayons
