Saʿdi entering a learned gathering

Saʿdi entering a learned gathering

From a manuscript of Saʿdi, Bustan (The orchard), c 1515–20

Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, MS Marsh 517, fol 34r

Saʿdi is best known for his moralistic epics, the Gulistan and the Bustan. His Bustan is divided into 10 chapters, each devoted to a particular moral virtue.

This illustration shows Saʿdi joining a gathering of scholars.

They meet in front of a beautifully rendered gateway through which an idealised garden may be glimpsed, an earthly representation of paradise.
